    Free Pattern: Bow Headband

The best thing about sewing is making exactly what you want. I was looking for a free pattern or tutorial online for a “Bunny-ear” or “Dolly-bow” headband….but I couldn’t find one with the specifics I was after: woven fabric (since I have so…

    Free Pattern: Wing-Collar Shirt Dickey

Many of my sewing projects are born of necessity, in other words they are “needs” instead of “wants”. This is one of those. My dear friend Allison has a job that requires wearing a uniform smock, and recently management decided that staff…

Because toddlers. Hard to imagine that anyone ove Because toddlers.

Hard to imagine that anyone over age 2 has to wear a mask (families have been removed from airplane flights for non-compliance)...but if you need a tiny mask, this pattern starts at size XXS.

I hope my customer’s 3-year old won’t need to wear this to the strawberry-theme birthday party next week, but I added it just in case!

Free pdf on the 7PineDesign blog.

PS: this pattern was developed after trying a dozen prototypes and is carefully curved to fit snug against your ears which is the secret of not falling down.

Because upcycling. I love the idea of repurposing Because upcycling.

I love the idea of repurposing but it does have challenges. Sewing with vintage linens takes more effort and planning than rolling out a bolt of fabric.

This sweet strawberry pinafore is upcycled from a classic 1950’s Willender tablecloth. First the cloth must be washed and treated for stains (this may take several washes!) ... then carefully checked for worn out areas or even holes (I mark them with safety pins)...and then the pieces can be cut around the damaged areas (children’s wear and small items such as accessories are perfect for this).

Then you must source coordinate fabrics, which is simpler when purchasing off-the-bolt fabric that is designed in collections. I find that checks and dots work well for this, although they come in a limited color palette.

Thanks to @ohmeohmysewing for the perfect pattern for this project!

Because easiest patch pockets ever! I love pocket Because easiest patch pockets ever!

I love pockets but here’s what I dislike about making them: raw edges unless they are lined, turning them inside out if they ARE lined.....getting perfect square corners, making sure 2 pockets match exactly.

This pattern avoids all of that! They are lined but EASY to turn inside out....and the curved shape means you don’t struggle to get those perfect corners.

Plus you can add cute contrast binding, or even tuck in ric-rac trim or lace!

Because filters...yes or no? A friend in the med Because filters...yes or no?

A friend in the medical field told me she estimates that 99% of people (who are not in the field) don’t put a filter in their masks. Personally I don’t ...the 2 layers of fabric plus interfacing make it pretty hard to breathe as it is.

Now that the CDC is advising us to “up our game” I’m planning to include a filter in the masks I donate and sell on Etsy...and possibly add replacement filters to my Etsy shop.

So, do you think it’s important to use a filter in your mask?

Because “Catch 22”.... Did you know that som Because “Catch 22”....

Did you know that some seniors can’t go get a mask...because they don’t have a mask.

You can’t enter a store without a mask...and some people don’t trust shopping online.

I had assumed that at this point, everyone has plenty of masks and they’re just buying more for fresh colors, or to replace masks that are getting worn out. But that’s not true for some seniors who are going out into public for the first time in a year to get vaccines. Volunteers are matching up seniors with drivers online, but some don’t feel secure venturing out with disposable masks.

If you are still making masks (especially ones with filters) consider checking in with local senior centers to see if there is a need.

Because grading! Repost from @sewinglabmilano . Because grading!

Repost from @sewinglabmilano . Complete video shows classic hand grading technique of a basic pencil skirt. Readers of my sewing blog know that inconsistent pattern grading is a pet peeve of mine. While it would be awesome if all indie pattern makers had access to automatic grading programs, it is absolutely not necessary. What IS needed is an understanding of how sizing increases and decreases. This can be done manually and then scanned into the computer.

Watch the video if you are interested in seeing how grading works!

Because Happy Valentines Day! Love is keeping th Because Happy Valentines Day!

Love is keeping those you care about safe. My daughter wore one of the Original Origami masks this week (typically she wears a gator but they were all in the wash) . She was amazed by how this style stays on and lets you talk without slipping down.

The CDC recommends that you keep wearing a mask and make sure you have one that fits well. If you haven’t tried this one, it’s quick and easy to make, no pattern needed, tutorial is free on the blog!
