Why are some indie patterns graded so “jumpy”?

Have you ever used a pattern that “jumps up and down” in the grading between sizes?  Recently I was trying a pattern that had grades jumping between 1/4″, then 1/8″, then 3/8″: Since I come from an industrial background where this…

Pattern Dieting? How to make good decisions

Previously I blogged about fabric dieting….the logical next step is pattern dieting, right? I need another pattern like a whole in the head….UNLESS it is truly unique AND something I will absolutely use in the very near future. But there’s…

    Quicker Fix for Coachellas

It’s snowing (a LOT) here in Massachusetts but in warmer areas people are anticipating spring, which means sewing shorts, yay!  Last summer I posted about how to correct the “crotch bunching” in the adorable Coachella shorts, by extending the crotch curves…

    “Sewing in-between Sewing”

“Sewing in-between Sewing” is a term I picked up yesterday on Instagram from a post by the lovely Alicia, an Australian designer who has a sewing story all her own.  She creates and sells unique children’s-wear to raise funds for cancer research…you…

Because blessings. A friend who was raised in the Because blessings.

A friend who was raised in the Anglican Catholic faith asked me why I make baptism gowns in all sizes. “Aren’t babies baptized in the first three months?”

That’s definitely the custom in the British royal family, however between the many varied religions in the US, people have baptism, Christenings, and naming ceremonies at all ages.

I always get an upswing in blessing gown requests every Spring, and since babies are born year-round, there must be other factors. I’m just happy that families are finally able to celebrate together.

Because “modern heirloom”. Creating a clean, Because “modern heirloom”.

Creating a clean, simple baptism gown means that a family will have a special outfit for all children in this and future generations.

And it’s a chance to use the small yardages in my lace collection. This mom chose a cotton cluny trim I’ve held onto for many years!

Did I mention that I love making customs??

Because bidding wars.

Last year it was the scramble for vintage flocked sheers (maybe still is!)

How much would you bid for this?

Update: someone who shops for their littles online let me know that a bidding war for small-ish pieces of vintage Americana cottons is probably for the bonnet market. Who knew? The only bonnet shop I follow on IG (along with 100,000 other people!) is @sweet_as_april , and she concentrates on upcycling thrifted apparel. I think I have seen this print in her shop, but I’m sure it was from fabric donated to her. Well I hope whoever wins this can cut it into a whole lot of bonnets!

Because “cutters”. In the vintage linens worl Because “cutters”.

In the vintage linens world, a “cutter” is any piece so well-loved that stains won’t budge and holes are beyond repair. Often the hems and corners still have plenty of life AND have lovely embellishments!

Cutters are my favorites because they are usually bargains, and there’s no guilt in upcycling them. Right now there’s a huge trend in sewing with embroidered linens, which means the availability is getting lower and the prices are quickly rising. If you get frustrated trying to find linens to upcycle, be sure to inquire about cutters. Sometimes vintage dealers don’t put them on display, assuming they won’t sell.

Because blue and yellow to commemorate World Down Because blue and yellow to commemorate World Down Syndrome Day!

Every day I am privileged to see the beautiful faces of little models on the ‘gram, whose parents take time to share them with the world. Some of the sweetest are the children with Down Syndrome. The love these families exude is magical and always brings a smile to my own face.
